Description
This text is a collection of my pedagogical interests in identity, gender, social justice, and English Composition. It includes two critical essays, a textbook review, student interviews, and resistance discussions that all grapple with how to engage students in English Composition in the 21st century. I find social problems to be a perfect catalyst for rhetorical analysis and critical thinking-- topics that students experience everyday in one way or another.
We often overlook major inequalities and oppressions, especially when they are a crucial part of popular culture, economics, and personal relationships. We laugh at the oppressive jokes; we use oppressive language to validate our own identities.
I see English Composition as an opportunity to recognize how we perform in our own communities, how media affects us, through the study of rhetoric.
Why are we the way we are? Do we have to be?
Promoting communication, analysis, and discussion opens up opportunities to grow, as an individual and as a community.
I am stuck on MLK’s words as a driving force for my purpose as an instructor: In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
